A 9.54-carat Mexican fire opal anchors this 14K white gold pendant necklace, framed by 1.23 carats of multi-colored sapphires and accent diamonds. The pendant measures about 1.45 inches long by 0.90 inches wide; the piece weighs 8.4 grams in total and hangs from an approximate 16-inch chain, ready to wear.
The central opal is a warm, translucent orange-red stone, the color that gives Mexican fire opal its name. Unlike opals prized mainly for spectral play-of-color, fire opal is valued for that fiery body color. Most of the finest material comes from the states of Querétaro and Jalisco in Mexico. It is relatively soft (about 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale), so it is best reserved for special occasions and kept away from hard knocks, chemicals, and prolonged heat.
Around the opal, multi-colored sapphires add flashes of blue, pink, yellow, and related hues, while small diamonds brighten the white-gold setting.
