A freeform Australian boulder opal is bezel-set as the heart of this sculptural 18K yellow gold brooch, its face alive with electric greens, teals, and flashes of blue and red over natural ironstone. Rising from it is a gracefully curved gold plume set with a vivid spray of marquise shape sapphires and rubies totaling 2.97 carats, marquise shape tsavorites totaling 0.43 carats, and 0.14 carats of round diamonds along the sides. The piece measures 1.50 × 2.25 inches and weighs 20.8 grams. Ready to wear.
Boulder opal forms only in Queensland, Australia, as thin veins of precious opal locked inside ironstone boulders. It accounts for a small share of all Australian opal mined, is cut with high waste, and is prized for unique patterns and greater durability than many other opals because the host rock remains part of the stone. Fine examples with strong, clean-faced play-of-color are increasingly scarce. The brooch reads as a single organic form — opal body, gold stem, jewelled plume — rather than a conventional pin.
